Aftercare
Objects that are in constant use will develop a patina which we feel adds character to certain items. However, you can maintain a near original appearance for many years with a little aftercare if desired.
All our accessories are finished with eco-friendly and petrochemical free oils and waxes. Each finish is chosen for the specific use of the object.
For objects that you may come into contact with food, such as a fruit bowl, we recommend using a thin coat of food safe mineral oil or walnut oil to ‘refresh’ any surfaces.
For decorative items or items which do not come into contact with food such as a valet dish, simply use a very thin coat of a natural wax product such as beeswax; for a gloss sheen use a very thin coat of wax, leave for 20 mins and buff with a lint free soft cloth or soft paper kitchen towel. Alternatively, a very thin coat walnut oil can be used to refresh a surface and gives a satin finish when dried.
OSMO Liquid Wax Cleaner Spray (3029s) can also be used on all our products; always apply finish to a cloth not directly on to the surface of the object. Please read and follow manufactures recommendations and instructions.
Yaki – to heat with fire.
shou sugi ban (焼杉板) – Ancient Japanese method primarily as way to treat wood to make it weatherproof and more durable. The technique involves carefully charring a wood surface over several days by hand ensuring the timber does not crack or warp, the technique renders wood a deep charcoal-black or by lightly scorching a deep rich brown to bring out features and texture in hardwood. At KOOS we feel the scorching of wood reveals clean, distinct lines and an inherent textural beauty which elevates our pieces into the realms of fine art.
Yakisugi (焼杉) is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. By slightly charring the surface of the wood without combusting the whole piece, the wood becomes water-proof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable.
